Sanitation remains a critical issue in rural areas, where the absence of proper toilets and clean water not only pollutes the surroundings, but also makes them breeding grounds for diseases. Recognizing the urgency of the problem, Harshavardhan decided sanitation as a key area to tackle in his social activism.
He began by raising awareness of problems related to open defecation and the importance of toilets, inspiring youth in villages to join his cause, and organising Mandal-level meetings. Partnering with the Swachh Bharat Mission, he led collaborative efforts to bring cleanliness and sanitation to numerous villages, transforming them into healthier, safer places to live.
Undertook construction of toilets and houses for low-income households in Vaddera Basti, Kondapur, Hyderabad, and within 30 days the construction was completed, providing these families access to clean sanitation, and improving their daily hygiene.
As pilot, 30-plus villages in Ranga Reddy district were selected, and with community participation open-defecation was eliminated within 120 days. Soon the entire district was transformed into an open defecation free community. This led to around 20 villages being chosen as model villages and were awarded with prizes by central and state governments.
